Allow me to engage in a tiny bit of alumni pride

News coming out of Chicago says that my college alma mater, University of Virginia at Wise, has won the 2011 GEICO Play of the Year.  

Chicago, IL - The University of Virginia's College at Wise's punt return and lateral as time expired to beat Emory & Henry was named the 2011 GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced today on CBS Sports during GEICO Presents Best of College Football 2011.

Throughout the college football season, fans voted on Facebook (www.facebook.com/BestofCollegeFootball) to determine which plays reigned supreme. After more than 300,000 votes were tallied to determine the finalists, a group of CBS Sports college football experts named the Cavaliers' return the 2011 GEICO Play of the Year for its degree of difficulty, game-winning implication, and crowd excitement.

It's about time my old little podunk college got some national recognition, even if it is in sports.

MSNBC: New Preakness mascot a party manimal

Not everyone's thrilled about the new half-man, half-horse Preakness Stakes mascot that sports a nipple ring and a beer gut.

The mascot called "Kegasus" — introduced this week — urges those coming to the infield at Pimlico Race Course to be legendary, a reference to the infield denizens' reputation for hard partying. The Preakness, to be held May 21 this year, is the second leg of racing's Triple Crown that also includes the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.
The Preakness is the highlight of the Maryland racing calendar, often drawing more than 100,000 fans. The majority head to the infield, which becomes a giant party zone, a world away from the staid horse racing insiders in the box seats.

I'm with them.  The thing looks absolutely ridiculous.  I think only the London Olympics mascots are worse.
